Motherhood Untold: Six Essays on Unconventional Motherhood
This digital collection of essays explores the stories of unconventional motherhood and the experiences of mothering outside of the traditional boundaries that we are used to seeing in the mainstream. By addressing intersectionalities, such as race, class and sexuality, Motherhood Untold amplifies the voices of mothers of colour and contributes to a bigger and more complicated narrative of contemporary motherhood; examining the difficulties faced by black and brown mothers in modern society, as well as the experiences that broaden preconceived ideas of what motherhood should look like. The topics within range from migrant motherhood and non-biological motherhood to pronatalism and regretting motherhood. Throughout the collection, contributors challenge what society understands of traditional motherhood and what we see as unconventional or non-conforming experiences of being a mother today.
“The pieces are beautiful, nuanced and really capture the scope of the pressures and pain that motherhood can sometimes encapsulate.” - Sabeena Akhtar, Writer/Editor
